We also used incorporated math (counting and data analysis) into this lesson. We took surveys and made graphs about what kind of ghosts puppets they made and which story they enjoyed more. Ask your child what story they enjoyed more.
Design and Engineering in Kindergarten!
We had our first Engineering task last week. Students worked in groups to design a house for a ghost. They used linking cubes to make the house and then they had to test their design with the ghost when they thought their design was complete. Houses needed to stand on their own and they needed to have a space in it to to fit the ghost. This project encouraged a lot of group discussion and teamwork as they worked together to complete their designs. When they tested their design they then needed to record what the finished product looked like. This will be one of many STEAM projects we will be doing in Kindergarten. It's exciting to see their engineering minds at work!

Safety Drills
A.L.I.C.E Drill
Beginning the week of October 25th, our students will be reviewing the district’s safety protocol “A.L.I.C.E.” that deals with the unlikely event of an intruder in our school. A.L.I.C.E. stands for ALERT, LOCKDOWN, INFORM, COUNTER, EVACUATE. Over the past seven years, all WPS staff members have been trained on the A.L.I.C.E. protocols, and the drill has taken place across grades K-12.
In order to prepare our students, children will read and discuss the book “I’m Not Scared…I’m Prepared”, by Julia Cook, with their teacher. This book provides an overview of the different protocols, stresses the importance of school safety, and helps to strengthen the trust between students and adults in the event of a school emergency. Age appropriate discussions, procedures, and evacuation routes will be covered in individual classes.
