Literacy Center Time
We have introduced a program called Daily 5 in Kindergarten. It is designed to implement reading and writing in the classroom.
During Daily 5 children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks.
The choices will be:
Read to self
Work on writing
Word Work
Listen to reading
Read to Someone
During "Read to Self" Students will:
Keep their eyes on the book.
Read the pictures, read the words, read the pictures and the words, retell a story.
Use a zero voice.
Stay in one "just right" reading spot.
While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be reading with small groups and conferencing with individual students. This is also a time when our Reading interventionist will come into our room to work on letter and sound skills with small groups of students.

READING with RAZ-Kids
RAZ-Kids is an interactive reading program for students to practice reading fluency and comprehension. The students have a login and a password to get into their reading account. I am able to monitor the students' progress and change their reading level. These levels are all individually based on each child's reading level and are adjusted to reflect their abilities. The students can listen to a story, read a story out loud and then take a comprehension quiz. Each child earns points or stars to use for their RAZ Rocket which allows them to buy things for their rocket. You will receive a login instructions with your child's unique login and password next week. Let me know if you have any questions or problems accessing the site. This is a wonderful tool that will allow your child to build literacy skills. However, I strongly encourage parents to continue reading to their children daily as this is still a very important piece in each child's reading development.

Emotional Regulation
As you know we are learning about many different things in Kindergarten. Along with reading, math, science and social studies children are also learning how to recognize their emotions. We are using the chart and language above to help students identify where they are at emotionally with the goal of being in the green zone to learn best. Children are being taught tools and strategies to get themselves into the green zone. Ask your child about the zones... they are experts! Here is a song we've been singing when we learn about the zones of regulation.
Book Order forms will be sent home with your child this week. To order books please click below and you will be connected to Scholastic. My Classroom Activation Code is HMMDJ.
