Lunar New Year
Tuesday, February 1st was start of the Lunar New Year. We learned a bit about Lunar New Year and talked about some Chinese culture and traditions. We read non-fiction books and learned some facts about the celebration. We watched several videos of actual Chinese New Year Dragon Dances and the children were able to make their own dragons to take home. We also learned it was the year of the tiger tried to draw tigers on our own.
King ED (aka Silent E)
Below iWe were introduced to the final letter friend at the end of January. Maybe you remember your children coming home with gold crowns on. They had them on in honor of King Ed or silent E. Hopefully your children were able to give you some explanation about his powers. If not here is a brief summary. - When students look at a word they will check to see if there is an "e" at the end. If so King Ed will use his powers and jump to the vowel in the word and ask the vowel to tell him his name. For example: If the word being read is kite students will see that there is an "e" at the end of the word. Therefore they will jump to the "i" and ask "i" to say it's name. If King Ed wasn't in the word the student would read the word as kit. The letter "i" would not say it's name, instead it would say it's sound /i/. Ask your child what King Ed's powers are... if they need a reminder now you know the rule! Look in books, see if your child can find some words with Kind Ed and words without him. |
Winter Math
We did lot of fun math activities and used some fancy math vocabulary words this month. CAPACITY, WEIGHT AND LENGTH. Children Weighed and measured mittens. They also recorded the capacity of each item. (How many blocks their mitten can hold).
We also have been working with teen numbers and deepening our understanding about a teen number being made up of a group of ten and some more. Please encourage your child to talk to you about what a teen number is. Check out the link to the song below that we have been using to reinforce teen numbers.

Soon we will celebrate the 100th day of school by doing lots of fun counting activities. A note went home last week detailing an activity your child can participate in... Dress up like a 100 year old person. We will have our Valentines Day party on February 14th. Class lists for valentines were sent home on Thursday in an email. Please let me know if you need a paper copy and I will send it home on Monday.
